Utah Cost Driver Analysis

Transparency around healthcare costs and use is essential for making healthcare more affordable in Utah. To support this effort, we’ve developed an interactive dashboard that provides insights into where Utah’s healthcare dollars are going and highlights opportunities to lower costs and strengthen the state’s healthcare system.

The Utah Healthcare Cost Driver Dashboards uses data from the state’s All-Payer Claims Database (APCD), which includes healthcare payments for services provided to Utah residents enrolled in commercial, Medicaid, and Medicare Advantage insurance plans, spanning the years 2019 to 2023.

Using this dashboard, we can pinpoint the key factors driving healthcare spending growth and explore critical questions, such as:

  • Which healthcare services are most commonly used by Utahns?
  • Which services have seen the largest price increases over time?
  • How are medication costs and utilization changing?
  • What behavioral health services are being used?
  • What trends are emerging in the treatment of chronic conditions?
  • How do costs and utilization vary based on insurance type?

With this information, provider organizations, payers, purchasers, policymakers, and Utah residents can work together to identify solutions that bring the Utah Model of Care to life.
